 K.V. Johansen's latest novel, Blackdog (published by Pyr) will be released September 2011.  New Brunswick writer Paul Marlowe's latest short story, "Alpha & Omega", has been published in Issue 11 of Something Wicked magazine. There will be the Canadian launch of the art book 'Nova Cantabrigiensis' (Latin for 'New Cambridge') at Eyelevel Gallery, 2159 Gottingen St., Halifax, NS on 9 July, 2011, 2 - 4 pm. The website of the book is
http://www.novacantabrigiensis.ca This is a Canadian/British production by three Cambridge University alumni. It is designed by Dylan Spencer-Davidson (now at the Royal College of Art in London) and edited by Lizzie Alice Robinson. It is reproductions of 30 drawings from a portfolio of 365 letter-size drawings of Outsider art by Nova Scotian artist John Devlin (www.johnnydevlin.com). They are of an ideal university town imagined to be built in the middle of Minas Basin, Nova Scotia and modelled after Cambridge University where John studied in 1979-80. Some of the drawings were first exhibited by John at King's College, Cambridge, UK, in June 2010. There is an essay by Lizzie at the end which puts the drawings in context. The book is being printed in Wales and will be 8½ x 11 inches, soft cover, 60 pages, 32 leaves. The price of the book is $20 at the launch, $22 thereafter. Copies will be available at the Eyelevel Gallery bookshop and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia shop.

 Douglas Lochhead (B.A., M.A., B.L.S., D.Litt., LL.D., F.R.S.C.), poet laureate of Sackville, New Brunswick, and author of over thirty works, died March 15. He was 88. In addition to being a finalist for the Governor-General's Award for Poetry, Lochhead received the Carlo Betocchi International Poetry Prize for High Marsh Road / La Strada di Tantramar. He was a recipient of the Alden Nowlan Award for Excellence in English-language Literary Arts, and of many honorary degrees. After his service in the Canadian Army in the Second World War, Lochhead's academic career brought him to a number of universities, serving both as a professor and a librarian. He was Founder and First Director of the Centre for Canadian Studies at Mount Allison, and that university's first writer-in-residence. Massey College elected him Senior Fellow, and Founding Librarian, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1976. Well known also as a bibliographer, Lochhead received the Queen's Silver Medal in 1977, the Marie Tremaine Medal of the Bibliographical Society of Canada, and the Merit Award of the Atlantic Provinces Library Association. Lochhead's kindness -- and his love of literature and of the Tantramar Marshes -- will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. |
